COORDINADORA
Since 2009, they have led the Extraordinary Chair on Aging Across All Ages at the
University of León, an interdisciplinary space dedicated to addressing the challenges
of aging from a comprehensive perspective. This initiative fosters collaboration
between academic research, social institutions, and the private sector, aiming to
develop projects that improve the quality of life for older adults and transform social
perceptions associated with this stage of life.
In 2011, they expanded the scope of their research by incorporating
electroencephalography (EEG) to explore the neurocognitive foundations of aging,
with a special focus on brain processes related to reasoning and memory. This
advancement enabled the combination of brain activity analysis with research on
cognitive abilities, integrating neuroscience into the study of active and healthy aging.
Currently, they lead an innovative project focused on developing an environmental tool
based on artificial intelligence (AI) to evaluate the daily functionality of healthy older
adults. This system utilizes data collected through sensors and advanced AI models
to record and analyze daily activities, providing a precise and personalized
assessment of users’ autonomy. Beyond its practical application, this tool aims to
transform social narratives about aging, highlighting the capabilities and potential of
older adults in a contemporary technological context.
Their work reflects a constant commitment to designing innovative strategies that
combine technology and science to tackle the challenges of aging, always from an
inclusive and respectful perspective. Through their research, they contribute to
fostering a more positive, functional, and enriched vision of aging in today’s society.
The construction of aging, both as a social and personal concept, is deeply influenced
by family discourses and, increasingly, by narratives generated through artificial
intelligence (AI). This symposium aims to explore how these two dimensions—
everyday family expressions and AI-generated messages—contribute to the creation
of meanings about aging, shaping individual and collective attitudes toward this stage
of life.
The first focus will analyze family expressions and comments that reflect and transmit
values, prejudices, and meanings associated with aging. These narratives, whether
oral or implicit, can perpetuate negative stereotypes linked to dependency or,
conversely, highlight positive aspects such as resilience and wisdom. The second
focus will examine how AI, trained on human data, can reproduce, amplify, or even
transform these narratives. Tools such as chatbots, virtual assistants, and language
models play an increasingly significant role in everyday interactions, influencing
perceptions of older adults and their place in society.
This interdisciplinary space will combine qualitative analyses of family discourses with
practical examples of AI-generated narratives, highlighting the linguistic and emotional
patterns revealed by these expressions. Additionally, it will address the ethical
challenges associated with the use of AI in this context, emphasizing the importance
of promoting inclusive and respectful representations of aging.
The symposium will conclude with a proposal to integrate AI as a tool for recording,
analyzing, and transforming family narratives, fostering more positive and inclusive
visions of aging. This dialogue between tradition and technology invites us to rethink
aging in the digital era, building intergenerational bridges and new perspectives
